Every cable chain in this collection is made in solid 14K gold, 1.3 mm wide, in 16, 18, 20 and 22 inch lengths, and available in yellow, white or rose gold. A cable chain is the plainest link there is, a run of simple oval links, and that is exactly why it has outlasted every trend in jewellery. It lies flat, it does not twist through the day, and it carries a pendant without competing with it. Each chain is finished with a lobster clasp, made to order in our own workshop, and shipped insured and tracked to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia.
Solid 14K Gold, Not Gold Filled or Plated
Most gold chains sold cheaply online are not solid gold. Gold plated means a microscopically thin layer of gold bonded over brass or silver, and it wears through at the clasp and wherever the chain rubs. Gold-filled is thicker and lasts longer, but it is still a layer over a base metal, and it will eventually show what is underneath.
These chains are solid 14K gold the whole way through. There is no core of another metal, nothing to wear away, and no point at which the colour changes. It is also why the price tracks the gold weight rather than a plating process. If you plan to wear a chain every day, and most people buying a fine cable chain do exactly that, solid gold is the only version that survives it.
A 1.3 mm Cable Chain and How It Wears
At 1.3 mm the links are fine without being fragile. On the neck it reads as a delicate chain, present but quiet, which is what most people want from something they never take off. It sits under a collar without showing, and it layers cleanly with a second chain at a different length.
The width is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation. Go much finer and a chain becomes awkward to repair and easy to catch. Go much wider and it stops being an everyday piece and becomes a statement, which is a different purchase entirely. For a chain worn alone or carrying a light pendant, 1.3 mm is the width most people settle on, and it is the width we make this cable chain in across all four lengths.
Finished with a Lobster Clasp
Every chain in this collection closes with a lobster clasp. It is the fastening worth having on a fine chain, because it is spring-loaded and closes under tension, so it cannot creep open the way a cheaper spring ring can once its spring softens. The gate is also large enough to work with one hand and a mirror, which matters on a chain you fasten behind your neck every morning.
The clasp is where almost every chain eventually fails, and it is the part most sellers leave off the specification entirely. A lobster clasp on a 1.3 mm chain is deliberately sized to the chain, small enough to sit flat against the neck and disappear, and strong enough that it is not the weak point in the piece.
Choosing Between 16, 18, 20 and 22 Inch
Length decides where the chain sits on the neck, and it is the detail most often got wrong when buying online. Use this as a guide before you choose.
|
Length |
Where it sits |
Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 16-inch | At the base of the neck, just above the collarbone | High necklines, smaller frames, the top layer in a stack |
| 18-inch | On the collarbone | The default length, most necklines, the safest choice for a gift |
| 20-inch | Just below the collarbone, at the top of the chest | Open collars and knitwear, slightly longer pendants |
| 22-inch | On the chest | Larger pendants, men, the bottom layer in a stack |
The Best Gold Chain for a Pendant
If you are buying a gift and you are not sure, choose 18 inch. It fits the widest range of necks and necklines, and it is the length most pendants are designed around.
A cable chain is the standard pendant chain, and there is a good reason for that. The links are uniform and rounded, so a bail slides freely along them, and the pendant settles at the centre of the neck instead of dragging off to one side. A figured or patterned chain competes with a pendant for attention. A cable chain simply holds it.
Because our diamond pendants are sold without a chain, a cable chain from this collection is what most customers pair them with. At 1.3 mm the links pass through almost every standard bail. If you are buying for a pendant you already own, measure the opening of its bail first, because a heavier chain will not thread through a fine one, and there is no way to widen it afterwards.
Yellow, White and Rose Gold
All four lengths are available in yellow, white or rose gold, and the tone changes the character of the chain more than the width does. Yellow is the warm, traditional choice and the one most people picture when they think of a gold chain. White reads cooler and more modern and sits well against silver-toned watches. Rose is the softest of the three and the least common, which is part of its appeal.
The simplest way to decide is to match the chain to whatever it will carry and to the metal you already wear most. A chain bought for a specific piece should match that piece. If you are buying it to hold one of our initial pendants, pick the tone of the pendant rather than the tone of the chain, since the pendant is what people will look at.
Gold Weight and What You Are Actually Paying For
A plain gold chain has no stones, so almost all of its value is the gold itself. That makes gram weight the number worth comparing, and it is the number most sellers leave off the page. Two chains that look identical in a photograph can differ by half a gram, and half a gram of 14K gold is a real difference in both cost and how the chain feels in the hand.
| Length | Approximate gold weight |
|---|---|
| 16 inch | 2.3 grams |
| 18 inch | 2.5 grams |
| 20 inch | 3.7 grams |
| 22 inch | 4 grams |
Weights are approximate because each chain is made by hand to order. If a seller will not tell you the gram weight of a solid gold chain, that is usually worth asking about.
Gold Miami Cuban Link Chains for a Bolder Look
A fine cable chain is not what everyone is after. If you want a chain that announces itself, with dense flat links and real weight on the neck, our gold Miami Cuban link chains run from 5.5 mm to 8 mm in 20 to 24 inch lengths, with a box clasp that sits flush against the links.
The two styles are worn for opposite reasons. A cable chain is the one you forget you have on. A Cuban link is the one you put on because you want it seen. Plenty of people own both and layer them at different lengths.
Made to Order in Any Length, Width or Karat
If none of the four lengths is right, the chain can be made to your measurement. Length, width, gauge and gold tone are all specified before we start, and nothing is cut from stock. Tell us what you need on our made to order jewellery page, and we will quote it before any work begins.
This matters more than it sounds. A 19-inch chain is not something you will find in a shop, but it is the right length for a lot of people, and made to order is the only way to get it in solid gold without paying for a bespoke commission.
Crafted by a Fourth Generation Jewellery House
A chain looks like the simplest thing a jeweller makes, and it is the hardest to make consistently. Every link has to be soldered closed, sized identically to the one before it, and finished so that no join is visible or catches the skin. One badly closed link is where a chain fails, and it will not fail on the day you buy it. It will fail in a year.
Jebij has worked in solid gold since the 1970s and is now a fourth generation jewellery house with its own workshop. Every chain is inspected link by link before it is packed.
Why Buy Your Gold Chain from Jebij
You are buying from the workshop that makes the piece rather than from a reseller adding a margin to somebody else's stock. The gold weight, the width and the length are published rather than hidden, the chain is solid throughout, and it is made to your chosen length and tone after you order rather than pulled from a bin. Delivery is insured and tracked to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia.
If a plain chain is not what you are after and you want something already set with stones, our gold diamond necklaces cover the same lengths with the pendant built in.
